The British Embassy Jakarta, in partnership with the Ministry of Communications and Digital (Komdigi) through 1000 Digital Startup National Movement and Instellar, hosted a Green Tech Innovation Showcase on 5 December 2024, at Milieu Space, Surabaya. This event was a key moment of the Hatch x Powering Entrepreneur for Digital Excellence (PEDE) incubation programme, showcasing rising Indonesian green tech startups and their commitment to improving the environment and society.
The Green Tech Innovation Showcase was attended by over 161 digital talents, startups, professionals, government representatives, investors, and ecosystem enablers. The event featured panel discussions with industry professionals, innovation exhibitions, pitching sessions, and networking opportunities for collaboration with potential corporate partners, investors, and venture capitalists with an enthusiasm for green tech growth.
The Hatch x PEDE programme targeted green tech startups across East Java and Bali. Over 90 startups applied, and, after a rigorous selection process, 14 startups predominantly from the agri-tech and climate-tech sectors–were selected to receive four months of intensive capacity-building training and expert mentoring to enhance their products and services.
The contribution of digital startups across these sectors is increasingly crucial for supporting national climate targets, making them strategic partners in creating sustainable environmental impacts across Indonesia. The UK is committed to support the green digital sector by promoting digital solutions for the climate and environment, and to boost economic growth for both countries.
Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital (Komdigi), Bonifasius Wahyu Pudjianto, said:
“We strongly support the role of startups in accelerating digitalisation and delivering innovative solutions to environmental challenges in Indonesia. Through digital technology, startups create widespread impacts, from resource efficiency to emissions reductions. Collaboration amongst the government, private sector, and startups is vital for achieving sustainable development.”
British Deputy Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor-Leste, Matthew Downing, said:
“As we celebrate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the UK and Indonesia this year, we hope this collaboration will pave the way for more impactful and sustainable tech developments in Indonesia, where startups have the opportunity to tackle environmental issues firsthand and learn from the UK’s experience in tackling similar challenges. Technology has a huge role to play in addressing environmental challenges in Indonesia and across the rest of the world.”
One of the participant of the Hatch x PEDE programme, said:
“Being selected for this incubation programme was an extraordinary experience. I learned many new things, such as tools for addressing business needs, access to professional mentoring, and opportunities to connect with potential partners. This programme was truly comprehensive and packed with benefits!”
The Hatch x PEDE incubation programme will continue supporting green-tech start-ups by running a second round of support in the new year. Programme registration will open December 2024 to March 2025.
