The second Peer Learning session of the Instellar & IKEA Social Entrepreneurship Accelerator (I-SEA) programme took place on Friday, July 11th, 2024, at IKEA Alam Sutera. As we welcomed 10 selected social enterprises for the Second Cohort of I-SEA, the focus was on enhancing the capacity of participating changemakers in effective organizational management and supporting them through tailored mentorship and guidance. I-SEA Peer Learning, held once every few months, serves as a space to strengthen bonds among cohorts and for them to learn from each other.
The day began with a sharing session on leadership featuring Adrian Worth, Managing Director of IKEA Indonesia, and Raushanfikr Qhaumiy, Chief Representative Officer and Business Development Manager at IKEA Supply AG. They shared their leadership journeys and experiences, encouraging social enterprises to embrace values such as trust, empathy, leading by example, and simplicity. Emphasizing honesty, sincerity, and empathy, they advocated for a leadership style that is both straightforward and accessible.
Adrian highlighted his commitment to being present and approachable by visiting IKEA locations and making himself accessible for IKEA co-workers. Raushanfikr recounted a time when he made a mistake and was given 100% trust to fix it, a principle he now applies in his leadership. Both speakers inspired changemakers to encourage making a positive impact, highlighting the importance of equipping and motivating others toward sustainability. Adrian said, “As a leader, we have a responsibility to influence other people through our business. We can start by educating people on the importance of sustainability, equip and encourage them to make a positive impact through their everyday behavior.”
Following the leadership sharing session, I-SEA Changemakers were split into two groups. One group participated in a discussion with a representative from IKEA Supply, while the other engaged with a representative from IKEA Retail. This session offered valuable insights into IKEA’s approach to retail furniture business through responsible sourcing and a sustainable value chain. IKEA introduced its code of conduct, known as the IWAY, highlighting the company’s commitment to positively impacting people, society, and the planet throughout its operations. Partners of IKEA, including Lung Victory Carpet and Green Rebel, also shared insights gained from their partnerships with IKEA.
Before concluding the day, I-SEA Changemakers were paired with mentors to pick their brains on specific issues related to their respective expertise. The session allowed social entrepreneurs to connect with mentors and peers, fostering a collaborative environment for exchanging ideas and learning from each other’s experiences.
